As a rule, notwithstanding, they can recoup from these money related and different misfortunes with proper venture or pay Having data of various security levels on a similar PC frameworks represents a genuine danger. Animal House Essay Example For Students

Creature House Essay Social critique is in some cases found at the core of good craftsmanship, regardless of whether that fine art is writing or famous music. The tale, Animal Farm by George Orwell, and the stone collection, Animals composed and performed by Pink Floyd share a similar trait of blistering social discourse. The works of art likewise share a creature analogy that serves to illuminate human social cooperations and separation capacities. On the other hand, the fine arts separately assault the oppositely contradicted, financial frameworks of socialism (by Orwell) and private enterprise (by Roger Waters). The craftsmanships are exclusively astonishing, however when seen couple, implies the possibility that financial frameworks are as yet advancing and in time the terms free enterprise and socialism will be thought as insufficient as feudalism. The common qualities of social critique and creature similitude truly, are what make these specific works of art the stunning instances of their individual sorts that they are. The creature allegory will in general delineate people as being roused by our bestial wants, just as the propensity among ourselves to be exceptionally serious and regularly, merciless. In Animal Farm, Orwell puts the pigs similar to the pioneers, or the exploiters of the majority, contingent upon your perspective. Waters does likewise in Animals, delineating the pigs as cutthroat, self-included, and tyrannical experts of the majority. In the two works, hounds are an implementer type, driven either by a feeling of energy, respect, and pride, yet in addition those pessimists who relish in the force they have been given and appreciate manhandling those more fragile than themselves. The sheep are a mutual trait of the two works, portraying them as handily controlled and prompted the butcher. The works veer from each other in which theory they exclusively embrace. Orwell? s novel is an undeniable assault against socialism. The pig characters of the novel speak to the political figures of the beginning of the Soviet Union. Orwell proceeds to delineate the arrangement of the alleged ? class-less? society as an unbelievable disappointment, while time would at last demonstrate his initial investigation as being right. Any huge scope, profoundly composed society in all of mankind's history has required social delineation, and Russia of the mid twentieth century would end up being the same. Similarly as with any general public, those with power have been and still are enticed to manhandle that power for their own individual closures, frequently to the detriment of those that have allowed them their capacity. Free enterprise isn't insusceptible from this characteristic blemish in social definition either. Roger Waters, who composed the greater part of the music and the entirety of the verses of Animals, violently assaults private enterprise and the deception of equity. Inside our own nation, there are various events on which those with tremendous measures of riches as well as impact are given unique treatment. Superstars, competitors, and business magnates are among a not many that are equipped for getting a slap on the wrist, or complete insusceptibility for activities that would land a ? no one? in the closest government prison quicker than one could flicker an eye. All things considered, our own isn't a general public that rehearses fairness, at the same time saying that it does. Our own framework is on level ground with socialism for giving correspondence, particularly when one perspectives the universal misuse of assets and individuals by worldwide super aggregates, the very epitome of free enterprise on a worldwide scale. This is the monstrous side of our framework, and this is the full view that comes into center when one encounters these works of art one next to the other, a stereoscopic perspective on the current, noticeable financial frameworks of this century. Neither accommodates genuine correspondence, and the two of them abuse their masses, with basically similar strategies of promulgation. It appears that free enterprise won the twentieth century, however one never knows what direction the majority will change after some time. This is the searing social critique that is at times found at the establishment of good workmanship, that will mix in some the thought of the frameworks and forces of the day, and of the past.

assassins a liveblog

assassins a liveblog last updated: october 22, 5:15 pm my hall, 2E of Next House, has an annual fall tradition in which we play a hall-wide game of assassins. the premise is simple: everyone gets a randomized target, and your goal is to assassinate your target. you win when youre the last person remaining. the way assassinations work varies year by year: one year it was food-related items, another year paper hats. this year, each player has two bandanas, one on each side of their body. the bandanas have to be partway hanging, so you need some kind of belt or pockets or belt loop in your jeans to thread the bandana through. youre killed if your hunter pulls either bandana from you. if you kill your target, your next target is your targets target, so if A was hunting B and B was hunting C, and A kills B, then B is out of the game and A now hunts C. this brings up an important invariant in the game, which is that there is a single Cycle of targets, and there cant be any loops: in other words, the hunter-target relationship is something like A - B - C - ... - A. this is important, because if you know the cycle, you know not only who everyones killer and target is, but their future targets as well. oh, and theres a very detailed, thought-out set of rules online that covers all different types of edge cases and so forth, as well as established safe zones: times or areas where youre safe, and cant be killed. (these include things like: youre safe if youre in the bathroom, or in your room, or riding your bike, or youre in class, but only if its a class youre scheduled to be in, and so forth) there are also rules changes that the game runners can add spontaneously as the weeks go by and the game stagnates, to push the game onwards. did i say weeks? yes, weeks. 2E assassins usually goes on for a while. this is my first time playing in the hall tradition: i was a wingrep for 2E last fall, so i ran the game, but didnt participate in it myself. its a lot more fun to be a player, though. :) the game started at midnight today, and everyone was going around with their hands clutched tightly around their bandanas, making casual conversation, trying to figure out whos hunting who. should you tell the truth? or should you wear ten masks, never telling the same story twice? should you trust your friends and form alliances? or should you be a lone wolf? ive decided to keep a live journal of the game on the blogs that ill update consistently as long as im still in the game. my strategy is more or less to tell the truth, and to simply play it safe and learn the cycle as quickly as i can. ill be actively discussing what knowledge i have with you readers, so you can keep up with whats going on: ill use names, but they wont be anyones real name (obviously, because otherwise this post can be used too easily for info): i think ill be ridiculous and go with this website. alive: [see day 4] dead: [see day 4] undead: [see day 4] DAY ONE: a hectic time. only five minutes have went by before the first kill, quickly followed by several others. neviatoh has slain melvirn, and pegem quickly did in both cheacorfan and yelvevu in quick succession. resheih died to vi, and kirif anticlimactically got a kill on judrai. five deaths already, all in the span of a mere two hours. now it is about two in the afternoon: i type this quietly in the safety of my room, without fear of the green cloth that gives me purpose to be taken from me. beside me is a folded piece of paper, a list that holds all that i know. it is valuable, and i am deciding to share it only with close allies, of which i only have one at the moment: taw. taw was the first who i approached, knowing that they would probably be a good ally. they accepted, and i know now that he hunts urvewo. just an hour ago, i had a talk with graal, and we traded our targets names turns out that graal is hunting taw. taw will be happy to hear that info! at the moment, im simply waiting for 5:30, when dining opens. a 22 two days ago at the rules meeting asked, is dining safe? ha ha ha ha ha. let me tell you, dining is the opposite of safe dining is a graveyard. i already ate about an hour ago, so im not necessarily going to dinner for the food today: i just know  somethings going to happen, so i might as well be there. still, something that bothers me that id like to know is who is my killer? as long as i know that, lowering my guard in non-safe zones will be much easier. but that remains to be seen. all i have are these pieces of the puzzle: chains of three, four, or even five, and all i need is a bit more information to glue them together. i also have to take into account the fact that there may be kills happening on-campus that i wasnt there for, and so my information will probably always be outdated in some way,   since its in peoples best interest to not tell people that theyve made a kill if theyre still playing. anyways, until i know who my killer is, im going to be on guard.     4:00 pm put in my second load of laundry. met judrai and arth: arth said he was hunting keli, who i didnt even know was playing (they dont live here). it would help if i knew who judrais old target was, because then i wouldnt have to pester kirif about it, but i think sooner or later ill get an answer. i have a shortlist of ~9 people that could be my killer: the chances that one of them is my killer is good if they dont really want to trade target names, so i might poke around doing that whenever i meet someone on the list. 5:00 pm apparently, i slept before kah-ze killed vodin, so adding that to the list. 6:00 pm dinner happened, which didnt really bring any new news since all the people still alive were in and out of dinner in a flash, which is probably fair. judrai confirmed that her target before they died was kah-ze, but thats about it. 12:00 am im back from toons rehearsal! o/ taw got my message and gave me updates as to what happened. theres been more kills. there was also a bug in my info, which was bound to happen, and now im at a point where the list isnt really going to get any more comprehensive because all the missing links arent really around hall (or they literally live outside of hall). this is normal, and usually leads to game stagnation for a while until enough kills happen to the point where pieces of the cycle inevitably glue themselves together. so far, the pieces of the living i have are: neenuldrei - kah-ze - ushelil - kirif - broozek - vo neivatoh - gra'al - taw - urvewo jeutek - talru - vi - ro pegem - lenc and thats it. nobodys on an island anymore. now is the waiting game: who are the targets of vo, urvewo, ro, and lenc? (these are also the people i need to watch out for, since i dont know who my killer is.) i think this game will start to really slow down. i want it to progress as fast as possible, though: and until that happens ill continue talking to people, trying to facilitate the piecing together of the cycle, while still keeping a foot in the race myself. i do want taw or broozek to win though, if not me: so if i die, ill still be rooting for them. well see how things go. DAY TWO: the calm after the storm || a triplet of kills. 1:20 pm im back from 6.031 lecture (today was literally an entire class on regular expressions fun times). i definitely felt a lot safer walking around campus, especially with the knowledge that i only have to look out for a small handful of people. nothings really happened yet, and i wouldnt be surprised if no kills happened today. theres still lots of time left in the day, though 9:00 pm theres been a lot of action. ro, vo, and lenc are all dead, which is important because they were all at the bottom of my chains. so now the chains look something like this: neenuldrei - kah-ze - kirif - broozek; neviatoh - gra'al - taw - urvewo; jeutek - talru - vi. theres also a new player that i didnt think was in the game but might be: kanna. theyre currently an island. theres some information im intentionally hiding here. thats because people are starting to use this blog as information, and i know things that are too confidential to be said out loud anymore. the number of players are thinning as we speak. kah-ze, if youre listening, i hope you make a play tonight. 9:55 pm kirif is dead. kah-ze, kirifs roommate, locked the door and waited over an hour for kirif to come back unfortunately, kirif wasnt even wearing their bandanas, so the kill was trivial. (in the case you arent wearing your bandanas, the hunter can simply tap you on the back to kill you.) DAY THREE: a moment of rest. 3:00 pm today is a safe day for me, since im at work all day, very far away from campus (all the way up north in burlington!) that doesnt mean i should lower my guard, though: you never know who youll run into. today, im writing a bunch of test cases/unit tests for a piece of code my manager wrote yesterday. exciting, right? software is fun. :) theres a slight complication running amok in the game currently. according to sources, kah-ze is what we would call well, a zombie, undead, what have you. his killer already killed him, but since kills are not confirmed until the confirmation email is sent to the game runners, kah-ze is still alive for all intents and purposes. this is a deal worked out so that kah-ze can continue to play, killing everything in his path, and, well, turning himself in when its his time to die. well see if that develops more tonight. DAY FOUR: the cycle, revealed. 12:00 am pegem died to broozek while playing black ops 4, and im his new target. me and broozek are allies, so this is good. this is also good because that means that the cycle is solved. at this point, theres nothing really left to hide, and were in true late-game stagnant territory, so ill be removing all the fake names and showing the full cycle: olivia - jeremy - bill - joon - hannah - lulu - cynthia - joey - tommy - michelle - olivia. why did i start with olivia? well, remember kah-ze? thats jeremy. its currently in olivias best interest to let a very willing jeremy to go on a mass zombie murdering spree, clearing the path to victory by waiting until the last moment to turn him in. and because olivias letting jeremy live, he has de facto immunity, not wearing bandanas, a free zombie, if you will. and whats worse, he really wants to, ahem, kill bill. and then me, probably. so what can i do? well even if we were to kill olivia, jeremy would still be alive (because that would irreversibly nullify olivias kill on jeremy). so me and my two allies are stuck on that front. there are plans in place to advance the game: but i cant get too specific. if both of my allies die, ill try and win the game: otherwise, im going to try and help either of my allies win. the ideal situation would be if it was just us three remaining; i would willingly die and let the other two figure it out, because my job would be done. but with jeremy currently hunting bill and then me, and with it only being a matter of time until bill dies, i feel like a clock is slowly but inevitably ticking. the game continues 12:30 pm in an extremely unfortunate series of events, my ally tommy died. :( this is a very sad day. i was more than anything banking on tommy to win it all, but now that tommys dead, all thats left is me and bill, but with jeremy down our backs its going to be hard to win at this point. lets talk about some of these hunter-target relationships and exactly how hard itll be for people to convert kills: cynthia - joey: extremely hard. joey plays  very  safe. joey - michelle:  honestly, maybe. michelle - olivia:  possible, but unlikely. olivia - jeremy:  this is more like an employer-employee relationship, honestly. jeremy - bill:  likely, since bill doesnt play too safe and jeremys actively looking for the kill. bill - me:  were allies. me - hannah:  maybe, but also unlikely unless i go out of my way to snipe. hannah - lulu:  maybe. the pressure is kind of on me at this point to kill people now, since were at a standstill of sorts. i actually havent killed anyone yet because i had no incentive, but now i do. 11:00 pm  an exchange between me and jeremy, just now: jeremy: i have some important information for you. me: oh??? jeremy: olivias dead. me: oh????????? jeremy: and im dead too. me: OH??????????? well. either michelle went off, or joey is on a rampage. there goes the zombie run. rest in peace, october 17th october 18th. DAY FIVE: six remain. 6:00 pm no new news. were down to six people (already!): cynthia - joey - michelle - joon - hannah - lulu - cynthia. im honestly surprised that the game has gone by so quickly, and at the same time not too surprised, since its been a lot easier to kill people this year. im not looking to kill anyone at this point, nor do i have a strong desire to win: but ill keep playing because, well, im in the game still so i might as well try, right? :) DAY SEVEN: five remain. 5:00 pm another exchange just outside of BC, with me and hannah this time: me: are you wearing your bandanas? hannah: can you kill me please me: only if you want to be killed hannah: yes please me: ok to be honest, this is a Mood. i didnt wear my bandana today and i was on campus all day. Read below to learn which sections will be most relevant to your own college search.   Tips for Narrowing Down Your College List   The first step in coming up with your college wish list is to figure out what type of school you want to attend.  Understanding Different Kinds of Colleges  begins with an article that discusses 15 factors to consider when choosing a school. Along with the quality of the academics, you should consider a schools student / faculty ratio, financial aid resources, research opportunities, graduation rates, and more. Its also important to figure out if youll flourish at a small college or a large university. If youre a solid A student with strong SAT or ACT scores, be sure to look through the articles in the second section, The Most Selective Colleges.  Youll find a detailed list of the countrys most selective colleges and universities  as well as lists of the colleges that tend to top the national rankings. Whether youre looking for a top public university or one of the best liberal arts colleges, youll find information on a range of impressive schools.   Selectivity, of course, doesnt tell the whole story when choosing a college. Under  Best Schools by Major or Interest,  youll find articles  focused  on particular interests whether they be academic or co-curricular. Are you looking for a top engineering school? Or perhaps you want a college with a strong equestrian program. This third section can help guide your college search. Other colleges have a Distinct Student Body that might appeal to you. In the fourth section, youll find articles featuring schools with specialized missions including the top womens colleges and top historically black colleges and universities. The great majority of college students attend a school thats within a days drive from home. If youre restricting your search to a particular geographic region, youll find guidance in Best Colleges by Region.  Whether you want to learn about the top New England colleges or best schools on the West Coast, youll find an article identifying the top schools in your chosen area. If youre not a straight A student or your SAT or ACT scores are sub-par, dont worry. In  Great Schools for Mere Mortals,  youll find top colleges for B students and a list of test-optional colleges that dont consider standardized test scores when making admissions decisions. A Final Word on Creating Your College List Keep in mind that words like top and best are highly subjective, and the best school for your particular strengths, interests, goals, and personality may very well be a college that isnt at the top of the national rankings. Once youre found the colleges that match your selection criteria, make sure your list includes a realistic mix of match, reach, and safety schools. Many of the schools featured here are highly selective, and plenty of students with strong grades and standardized test scores get rejected.   You should always shoot for the top, but make sure you have a contingency plan. You dont want to find yourself in the spring of senior year with no acceptance letters.

How Does Steinbeck Present the Theme of Loneliness Through...

+ The story Of Mice and Men is set in Salinas by the Salinas River - where George and Lennie spend the night after escaping from their previous ranch in weed – just south of Soledad. The theme of loneliness runs throughout the book and I will be exploring how Steinbeck presents this theme through the character of Curley’s wife. Many of the characters are lonely, and seek different ways to find comfort, for Candy it is his dog, this is why he finds it so hard to let him go during chapter 3 â€Å"The old man squirmed uncomfortably† this shows he’s in a lot of discomfort, as he does want to be lonely, and his dog accompanies him. For George and Lennie it is each other, they often speak about how important it is for them to travel together â€Å"Guys†¦show more content†¦Lennie is the only Character in book that doesn’t really show any dislike or hatred to her, when he first sees her he repeats â€Å"purty†, although he is told by Geor ge to stay away from her as he doesn’t want there to be no trouble. + Throughout the book Of Mice and Men Curley’s wife is never named, she is always just known as Curley’s wife. I think this is an important part of the book as it shows that she has no individual identity, it shows that she is merely Curley’s object. She is not treated as an individual and is seen by other characters as just a symbol of other things like Curley’s wife. + During the 1930s women were treated a lot differently as they were today. They were housewives. They were seen as ‘slaves’, and ‘the weaker sex’ they had to take orders from their husbands and obey them, they’d do chores, they would wash, cook and clean whilst the men went out and worked. They were treated without respect, they were only wanted for what they could offer; sex, cleaning. They were just seen as objects and nothing further. Women were not wanted on ranches, and that is where the role of Curley’s wife comes into it. Whilst on the ranch, as stated earlier, the men are not friendly with her, and I think the inequality between the two genders back then really affected their views towards her. During the book you really do see how different it was for woman back then, Curley’s wife is alwaysShow MoreRelatedAnalysis Of The Novel Of Mice And Men 1866 Words   |  8 Pagesdamage this can cause: Crooks and Curley’s wife fr om â€Å"Of Mice and Men†, and the persona in â€Å"Havisham† express their frustration, coupled with bitterness, due to being marginalized in society because of their gender or colour. Writing Techniques That Appeal to Readers Essay - 886 Words

Writing Techniques That Appeal to Readers Anyone who will be required to write at any time, no matter what the function of the writing, should learn good writing techniques that appeal to readers. Every type of writing should possess something that will draw the reader into the words to make the reader feel that he can relate to what he reads. Many techniques can accomplish this goal of writing. Diction, organization, description, and titles are all key parts of an essay that combine the authors thoughts and teelings in an effective manner. Diction plays and extremely crucial role in all forms of writing. Word choice can make an essay -- whether it is illustrative, narrative, or persuasive -- more easily understood.†¦show more content†¦She does this by using examples from the past to back her main ideas. In the essay, Unlikely Learning, Mary Kemmerer uses chronological order to explain how she passes her day in school. Danielle Trasciattis essay, Blue Band Emotional High uses some spacial organization although the primary development is chronological. The author uses smaller, minor points to support the main idea. Through the use of these forms of arrangement, the authors effectively expressed their points in a very clear and discemible manner. Another aspect that makes writing good is description. Description not only makes reading more enjoyable, but helps the reader feel as if he or she is involved in what is going on in the essay. It also adds life and reality to the writing. One essay that uses good description is Blue Band Emotional High. Danielle Trasciatti uses description to paint a mental picture and helps the reader feel part of the experience. Cloud Computing Conceptual Basis Computing

Question: Discuss about the Cloud Computing for Conceptual Basis Computing. Answer: Cloud computing has formed the infrastructural and the conceptual basis for tomorrows computing. The global computing infrastructure is moving towards the cloud-based architecture (Rountree and Castrillo, 2014). The recent developments in the field of the cloud computing has immensely changed on the way of computing as well as the concept of computing of the resources. In a cloud based computing infrastructure, the resources are usually in someone else network and it can be accessed remotely by the cloud users (Carstensen, Morgenthal and Golden, 2012). The study that is presented in this paper is mainly organized with the view of discussing and identifying the approach of cloud computing as well as the security issues and the concern that must be taken into account towards the deployment of cloud based computing infrastructure. Professional writers suggest: Winning Academic Essay Writing Delivered On Time When following the Global Business Strategy, the firm lets go of customization of products and follows a standard policy everywhere it is operating at. Its production, marketing and research & development are concentrated in a few key areas (most usually the centralized headquarters and centrally administered locations). The focus is on cost reduction as a tool for increasing profitability following the low-cost strategy and standardized products and production processes, in order to achieve economies of scale. There is, hence, a very strong pressure for cost reductions and sustainability. Also, there needs to be a lot of focus on the fluctuating demand patterns of the erratic world economy. Such is the case at Zara Fashions where there is remarkable responsiveness to the fluctuating demand patterns. Their excellent logistics systems narrow down the process of materialization of their products from the core idea from a long period of about nine months to around just two weeks. They concentrate their core operations like productions and research & development to their central location, Spain, and maintain standardization in their products and production processes and strategies, hence following a Global business strategy. There are three different market entry strategies that organizations may implement in order to enter any market, especially when entering an international market. These strategies are, Wave Strategy, Waterfall Strategy and Sprinkler Strategy. Using wave strategy, a firm enters groups of similar markets, one group at a time. First the firm enters the group of markets which are similar to the home market. Once steady revenue starts being generated, it heads for the group of markets which are somewhat different from the home market. After sable revenue generation is reported from the second group, the third group of markets very different from the home market is entered. In a waterfall strategy, one market is entered at a time and all target markets are entered consecutively one by one. The sprinkler strategy is the one when all the targeted markets are entered at the same time with standardized processes and products. Zara Fashion, according to the article, follows the sprinkler strategy as it plans to open around 350 to 450 new outlets during the year 2009 keeping its production and management centralized in Spain and operating at a standardized level everywhere it goes. The average time taken for a normal clothing retail chain to materialize its products from the idea to the drawing board to the actual product ready to be sold in the stores is about nine months. For Zara Fashion, however, this time frame is exceptionally low, being less than just two weeks. This super-efficient logistics system has immense positive effects on the business of Inditex as compared to its competitors like Gap etc and is very evident from its progress and growth as compared to others. It provides it with a great competitive advantage to the firm and helps it respond very quickly to the ever-fluctuating market demands and fashion requirements. Despite the critiques' and analysts' comments and concerns about Inditex's Logistics system not being able enough to handle such a rapid growth and expansion, the management is very positive that the logistics are fully capable of handling the company's growth and expansion at least till the year 2012. Centralization is when the all processes, decisions and authority of a business is concentrated to a central business location and is only in the hands of the top authority. The decision making is limited to the higher management only and the lower management and staff is under a central control. Whereas, decentralization is when the authority and decision making is delegated to lower levels of management and every person in the organization is authorized at a certain level of management and operations according to the hierarchical level it belongs to. According to the article, Zara fashion follows a centralized business strategy managing its processes, production, R&D, and all other procedures in Spain maintain a standardized policy in all areas and markets of operation with very low or no customization at all. Vanadium Facts (V or Atomic Number 23)

Vanadium Facts (V or Atomic Number 23) Vanadium (atomic number 23 with symbol V) is one of the transition metals. Youve probably never encountered it in pure form, but it is found in some types of steel. Here are essential element facts about vanadium and its atomic data. Fast Facts: Vanadium Element Name: VanadiumElement Symbol: VAtomic Number: 23Group: Group 5 (Transition Metal)Period: Period 4Appearance: Blue-gray metalDiscovery: Andrà ©s Manuel del Rà o (1801) Vanadium  Basic Facts Atomic Number: 23 Symbol: V Atomic Weight: 50.9415 Discovery: Depending who you ask: del Rà o 1801 or Nils Gabriel Sefstrom 1830 (Sweden) Electron Configuration: [Ar] 4s2 3d3 Word Origin: Vanadis, a Scandinavian goddess. Named after the goddess because of vanadiums beautiful multicolored compounds. Isotopes: There are 20 known isotopes of vanadium ranging from V-23 to V-43. Vanadium has only one stable isotope: V-51. V-50 is nearly stable with a half-life of 1.4 x 1017 years. Natural vanadium is a mostly a mixture of the two isotopes, vanadium-50 (0.24%) and vanadium-51 (99.76%). Properties: Vanadium has a melting point of 1890/-10 °C, boiling point of 3380 °C, specific gravity of 6.11 (18.7 °C), with a valence of 2, 3, 4, or 5. Pure vanadium is a soft, ductile bright white metal. Vanadium has good corrosion resistance to alkalis, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and saltwater, but it oxidizes readily at temperatures exceeding 660 °C. The metal has good structural strength and a low fission neutron cross section. Vanadium and all of its compounds are toxic and should be handled with care. Uses: Vanadium is used in nuclear applications, for producing rust-resistant spring and high-speed tool steels, and as a carbide stabilizer in making steels. Approximately 80% of the vanadium that is produced is used as a steel additive or ferrovanadium. Vanadium foil is used as a bonding agent for cladding steel with titanium. Vanadium pentoxide is used as a catalyst, as a mordant for dyeing and printing fabrics, in the manufacture of aniline black, and in the ceramics industry. Vanadium-gallium tape is used to produce superconducting magnets. Sources: Vanadium occurs in approximately 65 minerals, including vanadinite, carnotite, patronite, and roscoelite. It is also found in certain iron ores and phosphate rock and in some crude oils as organic complexes. Vanadium is found in small percentages in meteorites. High purity ductile vanadium may be obtained by reducing vanadium trichloride with magnesium or a magnesium-sodium mixture. Vanadium metal also may be produced by calcium reduction of V2O5 in a pressure vessel. Public Law - Essay Example In United States, the Supreme Court argued that those penalized for lifetime imprisonment, are maybe disenfranchised for failing to exercise their right to vote, but that remain part of the punitive measures. 2 Karlan (2002), like other advocate, contend that â€Å"lifetime disenfranchisement as a punishment is extremely disproportionate to the offenses for which it often imposed.† 3 To some extent, this view was reverberated in the controversial case Hirst v UK 20054, where a felon raised a question of law in the international court and assailed that UK’s electoral policy is in conflict to international human rights standards and to universally adopted principles for total rehabilitation or reformation of felons. 5 1. Hirst: Rising for his rights Hirst6 was penalized for lifetime imprisonment in 1980 for the commission of manslaughter based on medical evidences presented for adjudication. His tariff expired in 1994 but he remained in detention because the Parole Board considered him dangerous. Barred to vote under Representation of the People Act 1983 as a felon, he challenged the law based on Human Rights Act 1998 and argued that the provision prohibiting him to exercise his right to suffrage is contrary to European Convention on Human Rights. However, at the Divisional Court in 2001, Lord Justice Kennedy7 decided that prisoners forfeited the right to participate in political affairs for his country because â€Å"removal from society means removal from the privileges of society†. 8 Such incarceration and subsequent depravity of practicing his civil rights, particularly the right to vote, is also practiced in Europe, western countries and in other democratic Asian nations. In UK, this policy take its historic root from Section 4 of the Representation of the People Act 1969 that was substantially inspired by Forfeiture Act 1870, a law that impose â€Å"civic death† for convicted criminals. 9 True, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) stipulated the protection of every citizen for opportunity regardless of distinction and to participate in the conduct of public affairs including election. But on the same context, the populace is also legally protected for security, an inherent right for self- preservation from harm and against dangerous and convicted criminals. This indeed demand advocates to imperatively balance the appreciation of rights. For while prisoners, deprived of liberty, are treated humanely with his inherent dignity as a person, but his other civil rights are temporarily curtailed with the intent of rehabilitating and reforming him from grievous offense until he will be mainstream back to the society after completing his sentence.† 10 Inside the penology’s confines, a felon may require expert therapy to diagnose his problems and needs, inclusive of psychological, spiritual and medical aspects while in the process of reformation. 11 Clearly, it is the intent of the state to penalize a convicted felon by suspending some of his civil rights to reform him but legal luminaries

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Analysis Essay

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Analysis Essay With reference to one or two episodes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer studied in class, explain how the series encourages the viewer to question assumptions about high and low culture and/or television as a form of popular culture. You may wish to consider issues of genre, authorship and gender. Vampires are widely known for their slick back black hair, fanged teeth and black and red capes; however, in the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer these traditions have made different way for female fighters and ghoulish monsters. We each have our own different thoughts about what and who vampires are, but the media use their power on public to create a strong image of what are vampires should look like and have endorsed traditions believed for many years. In order to maximise viewing figure, the producers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer have made a good mix of the horror genre and the typical, classical American high school show. This mixture of different genres is suitable for many different class or age groups and tastes. The first episode is titled Welcome to Hellmouth this name is an oxymoron as it uses words that express good and bad. The build up to the episode shows a young couple breaking into the school through a window in the science lab. This action not only ads tension but also shows a link between science and the supernatural, something that has been talked about for hundreds of years. The woman turns into a green hideous monster and kills that boy. This is very rare for a vampire tale as traditionally vampires did not look like monsters and also they only attacked defenseless females. The episode starts properly when Buffy Summers, a 16 years old girl moves to Sunnydale, from LA with her mother. This is not the setting that the audience would expect for a vampire story as the word Sunnydale hardly paints a picture of a dark, horror place full of vampires. Therefore, this name subverts the traditional signifiers. On the first day of school, the popular girl named Cordelia inducts Buffy into the cool crowd, Buffy attempts to be friends with three other students,Willow, Xander and Jesse. This gesture shows us that Buffy is a good judge of character, strong minded and that she is a leader not a follower. Buffy goes to the school library to get some text books. The library, although a more unusual setting was much more like something from a vampire story, it was dark and empty. To add tension the producers used scary disjointed music to try and set the scene and the camera moves in onto a newspaper article, to which you can read the headline which refers to a missing teenage boy. This article casts a question mark over the normal nice Sunnydale. Then a figure appears behind Buffy, it is Buffys new watcher and the new school librarian,Giles. He brings a book with Vampyr on the cover and scares Buffy off. This endorses the old traditions as the book was old, and full of cobwebs, possibly to add more mystery to this section. The spelling Vampyr again highlights the books age and tries to make it look even more strange, this also brings more history and tradition into the episode, two elements that are important to any gothic style story. The show seems to take a different twist when a dead body is found in the school changing rooms. It is unusual that the body was discovered in the school and another good point to note is that the victim was a man, which is unusual for a vampire story, as traditionally the victims were all defenseless females. Buffy to investigate and found the body was killed by vampires. At home, Buffy prepares for her night out to the Bronze, Sunnydales only night club. Her mum thinks that everything is going to work out in Sunnydale and that they will be able to have a happy life there. It is very ironic as Buffy knows that bad things are just around the corner and also this shows that her mother is unaware that she is a vampire slayer. On her way to the Bronze, Buffy senses she is being followed and heads into an alleyway. A tall young man comes out of the shadows searching for her. She swings down from a bar above him and knocks him to the ground. He claims not to bite and that he just wants to help her. This section endorses up to the point where Buffy swings down and attacks the man. He warns her of the Harvest and tells her about the Hellmouth. This name paints a bad picture in the audiences minds and it is the total opposite to Sunnydale. Later at the Bronze, Buffy chats with Willow about boys. She tries to inspire Willow to stop waiting and to seize the day. Buffy spots Giles upstairs and goes up to talk to him. He continues to tell her she is the Slayer and has no choice in the matter. At first the setting for this scene may seem to be totally radical in a vampire style story, however after thought the venue is dark and full of young potential victims so is a modern adaptation of the settings for the older tales. For example, the more traditional tales were set in a graveyard or spooky house, which was dark and the time was always in the dead of night. These characteristics can also be linked to the nightclub used in Buffy, as it too is dark and people only go to th ese clubs during the hours of darkness. At home, Buffy prepares for the night out to the Bronze, the only night club in Sunnydale. Her mum thinks that everything is going to be fine in Sunnydale and they can have a happy life there. It is very ironic as Buffy knows that bad things are just around the corner and also this shows that her mother is unaware that she is a vampire slayer. On her way to the club, Buffy senses she is being followed and heads into an alleyway. These characteristics can also be linked to the nightclub used in Buffy, as it too is dar k and people only go to these clubs during the hours of darkness. Buffy spots a vampire in the crowd below them and then realizes hes talking to Willow. The guy leaves with Willow as Buffy goes searching for him. She mistakenly attacks Cordelia and then pretty much ruins her chances for popularity. As Buffy leaves, she runs into Xander and asks him where Willow may have gone or else there will be one more dead body tomorrow. The vampire manages to lead Willow into the cemetery where he throws her into a tomb stone. As he tries to escape, Darla arrives with Jesse. Buffy and Xander turn up and Buffy kills one of the vampires and then fights with Darla as Xander gets Willow and Jesse out to safety. A vampire shows up and fights with Buffy. While they are fighting, Darla escapes to get Jesse, Xander and Willow. The vampire throws Buffy into a coffin where he jumps in and leans in to bite. Apart from Buffy, a female fighter, who manages to attack all the vampires single handed. This endi ng endorses the signifiers we think off when we talk about vampires. As the setting, a graveyard is the usual place for an attack in a gothic or vampire story. It is also interesting to note that the episode concludes with a cliffhanger, an unusual ending for many gothic style stories and films. As traditionally, the story finished with either the death of a victim or of the attacker. In any television programme or feature film, camera angles and effects are important as they portray certain feelings that the producers want to show to the audience, these may be something like making the audience think a character is small and weak by using a high angle shot, which looks down on the character. Or you could use the opposite effect by making a character look strong and powerful from using a low angle shot (looking up). In Buffy The Vampire Slayer they producers use one effect which is featured on several occasions. This is where a quick series of flashing images is presented to the vie wers; this technique is called a montage of images. In episode 1 this feature is used twice, in the first case, the montage is used as a title sequence and shows images that both subvert and endorse the conventions, including images of signifiers including black cats, stakes and green monsters along with modern things like female fighters. This sequence promises viewers fast pace, all action entertainment and shows clips of future episodes in order to encourage continual viewing throughout the series. The second montage is shown where Buffy is in bed dreaming at the beginning of the actual programme, after the introduction and the title sequence. This series of images is showing the audience that she is restless as there is some kind of distortion in the images, and some are not fully visible. This makes the viewers to try and understand the sequence and the majority suggest that Buffy is involved in someway with vampires or as a protector of some description. The images shown inclu de an old book which suggests the cultural history of vampires, a cross which represents Christianity and the way to kill vampires. Because of this legend, the cross points out that Buffy is a protector. Moreover, Buffy creator Joss Whedon described Buffy the Vampire Slayer as an all over the place transcending-genre kind of thing. (Stein, 2002) Well the text is mainly considered to be of the teen genre it does contain elements of the horror genre to. The fight against monsters and the idea of a patriarchal society is all central to the horror genre. The way that Buffys world is invaded by monsters, horror invades home is another shared convention between horror and BVS. However one aspect of the show that goes against the horror genre is the role of women. In previous horror texts women were weak and frightened; however BVS changes traditional genre and ideological views. Buffys embodied strength, power, and assertiveness destabilize the traditional masculinity power of the vampire character in the horror genre, in effect policing those who prey upon the feminized (Owen, 1999). Through the text femininity is conveyed as a forceful strong identity. Buffy is stronger then all the men she meets both physically and mentally. However Buffy is not empowered by past feminist movements in the text. She is empowered by herself. Indeed Karras writes that Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffys relationship with her mother can be understood as a metaphor for the tenuous relationship between second and third wave feminists(Karras, 2002) Buffys mother feels angry at the fact that Buffy doesnt take full use of the rights she now has to the feminist movement of the 60s. In conclusion,Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a popular culture because it provides a good blend of many aspects of both low and high cultures. It contains scenes that are scary, action packed and also offers addictive viewing like a soap opera. Buffy can be viewed by many different age groups as it seems that there is almost something for all, just the opening episode included many different styles of programming, from comedy to gothic style features. ‘Yet Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ also manages to defy convention by establishing its protagonist as an all strong, powerful willed women. Buffy as an open-image hero expose stereotypes and coded symbols that shore up a rigid war-influenced gender system in an attempt to chart new meanings for womanliness and manliness (Early, 2001) Reference list Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 1 Episode 1 â€Å"Welcome to the Hellmouth† Owen, A. Gorgias, Socrates, and Justice :: Philosophy Philosophical Justice Morals Essays

Gorgias, Socrates, and Justice When a person’s back is against the wall and the stakes are the highest, how should they handle the pressure? When the lines between right and wrong become so blurred, how is one to know what is the ethical choice in the matter? Imagine being accused of first degree murder, a crime in which you did not commit. However, the evidence against you is stacked so high, it seems you do not have a chance. Your lawyer says he could have you acquitted, but in order to do so he must engage in some unethical courtroom tricks. So with your life on the line, what is the right thing to do? Do you keep the lawyer or should you stand by the truth? I believe the nice thing for everyone to say is that they would stand by the truth. That would be if we, as a society, could really believe that the truth always wins out. However, realistically we know that bad things happen to good people and not always does good triumph over evil. I know that for myself I honestly think that being trapped like that, I would stick with the lawyer. For me being in that situation, I would be too scared to take the chance that the lawyer with the good, honest tactics could get me off. I would be too scared to not go with what seems to be a good thing. My attitude would probably be that since I am being falsely accused in the first place, then it would be fine to use whatever means necessary to have me acquitted. In this situation, I believe that Gorgias would have the same opinion as I would. Gorgias would have rather stayed with the same lawyer, because he would have more belief in the power of oratory. He believed that through oratory anyone or anything could be convinced even though that person might not be a professional on the subject he was expounding on. Through oratory, Gorgias believed that a person gains his personal freedom. In a courtroom, oratory could be used to convince the jury system of anything. Oratory, Gorgias believed, had the total power to persuade. Gorgias thought that oratory had the ability â€Å"to persuade the jurors in the court, the members of the council, and the citizens attending the assembly - in short, to win over any and every form of public meeting of the citizen body.

The Lifestyle Theory Free Essay Example, 1500 words

A person having a highly active lifestyle are prone to greater victimization since they tend to mix with greater number of people irrespective of whether they are good or bad, having no proper knowledge of their intentions. Hence victimization may be influenced. However the criminal victimization also depends on the individual’s incapability of not being able to predict the wrongdoers and the incorrect activities that might lead to crimes (Robinson, n.d. ). With the active lifestyles of individuals, particularly among the youth, there are greater risks of exposures to offenders in a society. This has been more associated with the assaults and criminal activities from strangers. For example, parental violence might also lead younger individuals to perform crimes. However such activities or crimes cannot be associated with the lifestyle theory. Lifestyle theory discusses about the cases where individuals spend large amounts of time out of their homes, with strangers, even at th e time of night and become prone to criminal victimization (Finkelhor & Asdigian, 1996, pp. 3-4). As studies of the FBI reveals, crime is an ever increasing problem in countries like America. The study of the policymakers are focused on the victims since only understanding the nature of the crimes and the criminals have not provided any solutions to the prevailing problems related to crimes. However, in many other cases, individuals possessed and expressed activities that made them the active targets to criminal activities (Krejny, 1999, pp. 1-2). This is where the lifestyle theory may be associated with the victimization of individuals towards activities of crimes. When individuals are parts of a society or a community, there are certain roles and expectations that are expected to be fulfilled by them. These behaviors and roles however vary from individual to individual. Also, with gradual changes in the social structures and the roles and expectation, individuals tend to get hold of newer skills and outlooks enabling them to adapt to the constraints of the society. With such developments, individuals also develop their concepts and understanding of crime and the fear of criminal activities. Thus constraints and restrictions in behaviors are often incorporated in their lifestyles creating several limitations. This gives an understanding of how and why lifestyles vary among different people.
